If you want to study abroad, the first thing you must have is evidence of your English proficiency. Most colleges, especially those located in English-speaking countries, often include this in their enrollment requirements for international students. One of the ways you can accomplish this requirement is by taking the IELTS exam.

While you cannot fail the IELTS test, given that it simply measures your English skills, it is highly recommended that you aim for a high score. The higher your marks, the better opportunities you will have. Enrolling in a review center for IELTS is one of the best ways to prepare for the exam.

After securing your English proficiency certificate, the next thing you must do is to prepare for your college life abroad. Here are some tips that can help you adjust to your new environment.

•    Hone your English communication skills
If you have not yet taken the IELTS, find an excellent training facility, like the IELTS Davao, to prepare for the test. Review center instructors can help you hone your listening, reading, writing, and speaking abilities—not only for the sake of passing the exam, but also to prepare your life abroad.

Do not stop practicing your English after taking the IELTS exam. Apply what you learned in your review center for IELTS every day.

•    Get to know your college
Research your prospective school’s background and culture. Look your college up on Google, visit its official website, and join its online student portals. You can download a map covering the campus grounds and let it guide you on your first weeks, or you can explore the grounds on your own.

•    Settle down in your residence before class starts
If you can, plan to arrive in your target country a few weeks before class starts. This way, you can have a chance to adjust to your new environment. Here are some of the things that you need to do before the semester begins.

o    Settle down in your new residence.
o    Get to know your neighbors.
o    Familiarize yourself with your country’s various hotlines.
o    Explore your neighborhood and find its essential places (convenience store, drug store, etc.).

•    Attend your orientations
Do not skip your college orientations. It is great opportunity to get to learn more about your college’s background and activities. Put what you learned from your IELTS Davao classes to use and get to know your classmates.

•    Join organizations for international students
Most colleges have student organizations dedicated to international students. Find out if your school has one and consider joining. Interacting with people who have gone through—or are also going through—your situation can help you adjust to your new environment better.

•    Explore your college’s extracurricular activities
Consider your school’s extracurricular options. You can try something new or participate in an activity that plays to your strength. Either way, you can meet new people, form connections, and boost your resume.

•    Consider your on-campus employment options
Find out if your college offers on-campus employment opportunities and consider applying. Not only will it allow you to practice what you have learned in your review center for IELTS, but it will also add more to your personal funds and enhance your resume.

Most international students have difficulties adjusting to their life abroad. And while this is expected, given that they are in an entirely new environment, the need to conform to their college’s academic, social, and cultural expectations makes the experience even more overwhelming.

Make your transition in your new place as stress-free as possible. Consider these tips to prepare you for your college life abroad.
