Having the opportunity to study in any universities in the United States is a privilege and a once in a lifetime opportunity. It is every students dream to be in one of the prestigious universities and colleges in the USA. Being a country that uses English as its first language, it is expected to any non-native English speakers to take an English proficiency examination as a requirement for their visas. Taking an English proficiency examination evaluates one’s ability in using and understanding the English language. Two English proficiency examinations are acknowledged in the US – the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) tests.
However, some students are wondering whether not taking these examinations will still give them the opportunity to study in the US. The answer is yes. There are some universities that accept students who have not undergone the examination or who do not have an IELTS or TOEFL certification. However, the student has to present a certification that they have attended a secondary school that uses English as a medium of instruction. Even with this exception, it will still be best to any non-native English speaker to have an IELTS or TOEFL certification. There are some pros and cons to having these certifications.
Having a certification on IELTS or TOEFL is a huge advantage to any non-native English speaker. With a certificate, one has proof that he or she can understand and use English well assuring his or her productivity and efficiency in the university or college.
