Given an opportunity to study overseas, are you willing to take it or let it slip out of your hands?

Tempting as it sounds, studying overseas is what most students want. There are a lot of Filipino students who are working hard to get good grades and to be able to find a good school overseas. As early as high school or even elementary, these young achievers have been searching for good schools in preparation for their tertiary or post-graduate education. It is exciting for these students to experience academic life overseas and at the same time being independent as they are far away from home. However, there are still things to be considered when studying abroad.

Here are some things that must be on the checklist when deciding on where to study overseas:

· Program offered by a school

As a student, you should be able to check the course programs of the college. Is this what you want? Does the program cover the areas you want to study in a particular major? Can you afford this program in this particular school? These are only a few questions that a student should be confident in answering a “yes.” It is best to compare other programs from other universities before signing up to one.

· Language

It is best to study in an English-speaking country or at least a university that uses English as a language for instruction. It will be very difficult for Filipinos to adjust to a new language other than English. Yes, we can learn new languages but it will be much more beneficial to be in an institution where you can easily find a way to communicate and interact in English.

· Weather
Some countries have extreme summer and winter. For Filipinos, summer is not a big issue. Will you be able to endure the cold? Are you physically fit to be exposed in a country with extreme weather? Before deciding, be sure that your body can adjust to these. You would not like your health be compromised while you are far from home.

· Living arrangements
Are you going to live in a dorm or with a host? There are some students who want to live in a dormitory to experience life with other students from other countries. Others prefer with a host family so that somehow they will not be feeling alone and homesick. Decide on which would fit best on your personality.

· Requirements
Each academic institution has its own requirements. Most of them need your academic records, financial records if you can afford to study and live in the country and an English proficiency exam like the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL). Check on these to start gathering your requirements for your application.

Are you now ready to start looking for a school? Be sure to have those items checked and you are good to go to study overseas!
