IELTS Reading Exam: Task Type 4—Matching Information

While the IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training differ with their source materials, their Matching Information section is structured the same way. Below are some key facts about this test type.
·         Matching information tasks require takers to pinpoint specific information in the lettered sections/paragraphs of text. It may involve finding:
o   a particular detail
o   a description
o   a reason
o   a comparison
o   an example
o   a summary
o   an explanation
  •   Once they find the information required, exam takers must write the letters of the section/paragraph in the appropriate boxes in the answer sheet.
  •    These tasks test the examinee’s ability to scan for particular points in a text.
  •    The number of questions in this task type varies.

Top Tips for Matching Information

Ace the fourth task type of the reading exam. Include the following tips to your test approach to great results in matching information tasks.
  •  Don’t dive straight into the text. Read the questions first so you’ll have an idea of what the text is all about and what you’re supposed to be looking for. Don’t focus on the keywords. Concentrate on the question’s meaning.
  •           Consider how the questions and text relate to each other. Here are three things that you should know before answering matching information tasks:

o   A paragraph can answer more than one question.
o   The question can refer to the entire to text, not just a portion of it.
o   The information you’re searching for isn’t always the main idea of a paragraph. Sometimes, it’s only a minor detail.
  •         Hone your skimming and scanning skills. One of the biggest issue with this task     type is the lengthy text. The answers aren’t mentioned in the text in the same order of   the questions. So, you really need to go through all the passages. Having on-point   skimming and scanning skills helps. So, hone these skills during your IELTS   Philippines review.
  •             Keep an eye out for synonyms and paraphrases. Here’s the thing: the questions   seldom match the text word for word. So, looking for keywords and phrases won’t   always cut it. You need to be on the lookout for synonyms and paraphrased versions   of the questions as well.
