IELTS UKVI Reading Test: Matching Sentence Endings
In this reading
task, you will be given a list of incomplete sentences with no endings and
another list of possible sentence endings. Your task is to match the incomplete
sentences with their correct endings based on reading a given text. Matching
sentence endings task evaluates your ability to understand how the ideas and
information in the sentences are connected to the overall ideas in the reading
text.
3 Simple Tips for Matching Sentence Endings
For test takers
attending IELTS UKVI review center, the
following are the three simple tips on how to ace the matching sentence endings
in the IELTS UKVI reading test:
Simple Tip #1: Evaluate the incomplete
sentences
Read the
incomplete sentences first and get their main idea. Highlight keywords
including names, places, or dates and other information that might help you
understand the gist of each incomplete sentence.
In each
incomplete sentence, you’ll need to predict what the endings might be before
looking at the list of the possible sentence endings. Think about what part of
speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, adverbs) makes an incomplete sentence
grammatically correct.
Simple Tip #2: Skim the text
As an IELTS UKVI test taker, maximizing your time plays a
crucial role in this reading task. Don’t just waste your time reading the whole
text. Simply skim the text and seek for the keywords that you found in the
incomplete sentences.
Highlight words
or phrases in the text that are similar or related to the keywords in the
incomplete sentences. Don’t forget to check for paraphrased sentences and
synonyms that are used in the text as these might trick you while answering
each incomplete sentence.
Simple Tips #3: Connect the incomplete
sentences to the list of possible endings
When connecting
each incomplete sentence to a possible ending, consider the following points:
·
The
answers for each incomplete sentence are in the same order of the information
in the text. If you locate the answer for the incomplete sentence #1 in the
text, then the answers for the succeeding incomplete sentences follow.
·
For
IELTS UKVI test takers, keep in mind that the
items from the list of possible endings are more than the number of incomplete
sentences. Eliminate items that are obviously don’t match to the incomplete
sentence.
·
If
you still can’t figure out the ending for an incomplete sentence, make an
educated guess.
