The TOEFL
Writing Section has two types of tasks, integrated and independent writing
tasks. This TOEFL section takes about 50 minutes to complete and measures your
ability to create and organize written responses on specific academic topics
and recent issues.
As a test taker
enrolled in a TOEFL review center, it is
important to find the best test-taking strategy that can help enhance your exam
preparation and ace this writing test. In order to successfully achieve a high
band score in the TOEFL Writing Section, below are practical tips that can help
you.
Five Practical Tips for the TOEFL Writing Section
If you’re a
student attending review classes in a TOEFL review
Philippines, read and follow these five practical tips for the Writing
Section:
1. Determine
the two writing tasks
The TOEFL Writing
Section consists of the following tasks:
§
Task 1: Integrated Writing
You are
required to use your three communication skills (reading, listening and
writing.) First, you must read a short passage (230–300 words) about a specific
academic topic. Next, you need to listen to an audio clip about a speaker
discussing the same academic text but from a different perspective. Then, you
are required to write a summary (150-225 words, suggested response length)
about the academic topic. This writing task takes around 20 minutes (reading
time: 3 minutes, listening time: 2 minutes, and writing time: 15 minutes).
§
Task 2: Independent Writing
Your task is to
write an essay that states, explains, and supports an opinion on a certain
issue. The suggested response length for this writing task is 300 words, and
you have 30 minutes to construct a comprehensive and concise essay.
2. Analyze
each writing task
In Writing Task
1, skim the short academic passage and highlight all the critical points. As
you listen to the recording, write down keywords and key phrases about the
recording. Doing this enables you to understand the overall gist of the short
academic passage and the audio recording.
In Writing Task
2, read the topic and determine its main idea. If you still can’t figure out
the topic, ask your examiner to explain it to you. Rewrite the topic in your
own words to make sure that you understand what is being asked in the topic.
3. Apply
a note-taking strategy
As you plan
your responses in each writing task, apply a note-taking strategy to organize
your ideas properly. During your review classes in a TOEFL
review Philippines, find the best note-taking technique that you can use
during the exam.
4. Manage
your time
Maximizing your
time is essential in the TOEFL Writing Section. To do this effectively,
consider the following points:
§
Spend
at least 2 minutes analyzing the short academic text in task 1 and the certain
issue topic in task 2.
§
Spend
at least 5 minutes organizing your responses in each writing task.
§
Use
your notes as your guide when constructing your responses.
5. Review
your responses
If you still
have time, skim your responses in each writing task before you proceed to the
next TOEFL section.
