The speaking exam is the shortest component of the TOEFL exam. However, that doesn’t mean that it’s any less nerve-wracking as the rest of the high-stakes test’s sections. In fact, most people consider it as TOEFL’s most difficult component. Here’s why.

         ·         It’s the third part of the test, which means that it’s the time when your focus is starting to wane from tackling the first two portions of the exam.
         ·         It doesn’t just challenge your ability to communicate in English. It also tests your ability to follow discourse, understand various English accents, analyze questions, and deliver cohesive and well-structured responses—all within a few minutes.
         ·         Its tasks can revolve just around any subject, which means that you have to be ready to answer challenging questions and delve into difficult topics.

If the last point is what often throws you off when answering TOEFL speaking mock tests, the tips below can help you out. Practice them during your TOEFL Philippines training period to get the hang of dealing with difficult questions.

       1.    Stay calm.
Panicking will only make it more difficult to come up with and deliver a good response. Identify what part of the question threw you off. Is it because you have limited knowledge of the topic? Or is it due to an unfamiliar word, phrase, or expression? Determine what it is, and you’ll know how to tackle the task.

       2.    Know how the test plays out.
There are three types of questions in the TOEFL speaking exam. Here’s a run-through of each type.

·         In the first and second tasks, you’ll be tasked to develop responses based on your own ideas, opinions, and experiences. You’ll have 15 seconds to prepare your answer and 45 seconds to deliver it.
·         In the third and fourth tasks, you’ll be tasked to use more than one communicative skill when you respond. You may be required to listen or read before speaking. You’ll have 45 seconds to either listen to a brief lecture or read a short passage, 30 seconds to prepare your answer, and 60 seconds to deliver it.
·         In the fifth and sixth tasks, you’ll be tasked to listen to a short audio recording and provide a response based on its contents. You’ll have 20 seconds to prepare your answer and 60 seconds to deliver it.

Take note: these are only summaries of the three question types. If you want to learn more about them, enroll in an excellent TOEFL review center in Manila.

       3.    Jot down notes.
It’s the best way to keep track of the information included in the passages or recordings. Then, let your notes guide your response. Make sure you back up each point you touch upon with evidence drawn from the provided material.

       4.    Go straight to the point.
Your speaking score is based on how well you utilize your 45-60 second response time. So, make sure you make every second count. Don’t beat around the bush. Address the task point(s) as best as you can. Practice your ability to respond to various questions under pressure during your TOEFL Philippines review period.
