IELTS Reading Exam: Part 11—Short Answer Questions
The Short
Answer Questions of the IELTS General Training test follows the same format as
that of the IELTS Academic tests. Here’s the lowdown on this section.
·
Short
Answer Questions assesses the candidate’s ability to pinpoint and understand
specific information in a text.
·
The
exam taker must answer questions pertaining to the text.
·
He/she
must follow the word count requirement, which may be one of the following:
o
No
more than three words and/or a number from the passage.
o
No
more than two words.
o
One
word only.
·
The
IELTS examiner does not consider answers that go over or under the set word
count.
·
Contracted
words (e.g., shouldn’t, wouldn’t, etc.) are not accepted.
·
Hyphenated
words count as one (e.g., state-of-the-art).

Add the following strategies to your own.

Answer the questions in order. The answers you need appear in the same
order as their questions in the text. So, don’t skip any questions. Start from
the beginning and work your way towards the end. If you were able to answer
everything after one thorough scanning, then there’s a huge chance that you
didn’t make a mistake.

Keep an eye out for synonyms of your
question’s keywords. The
way the question is phrased doesn’t always mirror the text. Most of the time,
the question is either a paraphrased version of a text section. So, don’t scan
for exact matches of the question. Determine the keywords of the question and
look for their synonyms. Practice doing this during your IELTS review period.

Base your answers on the text. Disregard any prior knowledge you have
about the text’s topic. Remember, IELTS is not a test of knowledge or
specialty. It’s a test about linguistic competence. So, focus on what’s covered
by the text.

Stick to the word count requirement. It doesn’t matter if your answer is
correct. If it’s a word over or under the set word count, then the IELTS
checker will mark it incorrect. So, make sure you follow the limit. Count your
words before moving on to the next section.
