IELTS Reading Exam: Part 10—Diagram Label Completion

The mechanics of the Diagram Label Completion task type in the IELTS General Training and IELTS Academic is the same. So, regardless of which exam you’re taking, you can use the summary below as a guide.

        ·    Diagram Label Completion assesses the candidate’s ability to follow an in-depth description of a concept and relate it to the information presented in a diagram.
        ·    The exam taker is tasked to complete a diagram that relates to a text.
        ·     He/she must follow the word count requirements, which may be “one word only,” “no more than two words,” and “no more than three words and/or a number from the passage.” Otherwise, the IELTS checker will not consider his/her answer. Take note of the following:

o   The examiner does not consider contracted words.
o   The examiner counts a hyphenated word as a single term.
o   The examiner accepts both the figure and word form of numbers.

        ·         The answers don’t always occur in the same order that they’re needed.
        ·         The answers can be found in a single section of the test.
        ·         The number of questions in this task type varies.

Top Tips for Diagram Label Completion

Refine your approach for this task type. Integrate the following tips to your Diagram Label Completion strategy to enhance your test performance.

·         Understand the diagram. No, you don’t need to understand every detail of the diagram. Just figure out what’s happening. Is the diagram about the parts of an item or a machine? Is it about a process or a sequence of events? Knowing what the diagram is all about will make it easier for you to find the answers in the text.

·         Determine the part of the text that contains the answers. This is the first thing that you need to look for when you read the text. Take note of recurring words and phrases in the diagram and scan for them or their synonyms in the text. Make sure you choose the right section. Otherwise, your answers for the entire task type will be incorrect.

·         Guess what type of word is needed. If the gap is a part of a sentence or phrase, analyze the words surrounding it. Figure out what word type (e.g., noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, etc.) will complete the passage. Practice doing this during your IELTS review period.

·         Check your spellings. Going over or under the required word count is not the only thing that can invalidate your answer. Incorrectly spelled words can also reduce your score. So, always check your spellings.
